We received a call to collect a small Agile
Wallaby from the Wonderful and always there to help Staff at
the Marlin Coast Vet Clinic on behalf of Wildlife Rescue.
My Daughter Shai aged 11 and myself had
been caring for Native Wildlife forever. My Mother Marie has
always been a very active Wildlife Carer in Western
Australia all her wonderful and varied life - Thank you Mum
for passing on the calling, we are forever in your debt.
We had never taken care of an Agile
Wallaby before.
Lilly had just furred when I picked her
up. Shai and I both just stared at her. I knew what Shai was
thinking, how tiny she is. I was thinking "Oh Crud", how
different a Red Kangaroo or Western Grey was compared to an
Agile Wallaby and got little worried. They are so different
- how was I to know what to do.
Shai is a little Reptile and Bird Lover
(Shai sleeps with her pet Python Pandora by her bed) and I
have cared for nearly everything but an Agile - I am not
from this area, so I have basically no idea what I am doing
with an Agile.
I immediately contacted Wildlife Rescue
for help.
My Knight In Shining Armor was a lady by
the name of Robyn. Robyn instructed me on exactly what to
do, what to get, where to get it and why to get it, all done
by telephone and email. I went and met the Amazing Renee,
our Wildlife Rescue Centre Manager, who is like a Guardian
Angel overlooking everything and making sure everything
works.
I also checked the Internet (I have an I.T.
Background). I found the
Wildlife Rescue Site and the
Wallaby Rescue site. These were invaluable to us. We
checked them both, constantly for information in the first
month of caring for Lilly. These sites made everything easy.
We also knew, we had The Hungerfords
living down the road from us. So, with all the information
at hand and knowing help was at hand if anything did go
wrong, we set about caring for Lilly.
Lilly has thrived. Taking care of Lilly
has been a pleasure for us - even my eight year old son has
loved the experience and I did not realize that I liked
Macropods so much (at least Agiles don't try and push you
around when they are teenagers like Reds do - well, I hope
not, I don't know yet!!!) . Recently I emailed Robyn about
the Pre-Release Procedure, as I feel Lilly will be ready in
about a month and timing is so important.
A week ago Banjo arrived. Banjo is an
Agile who weights 1.5kg, just a bit heavier than Lilly.
Banjo was in pretty bad shape but he has pulled through so
far and we are feeling confident that he will recover. Banjo
and Lilly will hopefully go to Pre-Release together. Stay
Tuned.
Lily and Banjo both progressed wonderfully
and have now gone to Pre-Release. They have gone to The
Wallaby Angel on the Tablelands by the name of Dale. Thank
you very much Dale for taking over the care of our foster
babies, you are the best!!!!
