WHIPTAILS & AGILES - WHAT'S THE
DIFFERENCE?
Carer Renee is looking
after a couple of Joeys at the moment. We don't see many
Whiptail wallabies in care in Tropical North Queensland. To
the untrained eye, it would be very easy to mistake a
Whiptail wallaby for an Agile wallaby. They both have white
stripes on their faces and other similar features.
However, one very big
difference is tail
length. Whiptail
wallabies (also known as
"Pretty Face") have a
longer tail and, as
their name suggests,
were once highly sought
after for their leather
to make whips.
Thankfully, common sense
has finally prevailed
and whiptail wallabies
have been removed from
the list of macropod
species that are hunted
commercially.
These pictures
show clearly the
difference between the
Whiptail Wallaby (Macropus
Parryi) and the Agile
Wallaby (Macropus Agilis).
