Did you know that FNQ
Wildlife Rescue receives an average of 350
calls per month from people requesting
assistance with sick, injured or orphaned
wildlife. We also assist Qld Parks and
Wildlife Service by fielding calls from the
public regarding snake removals. The pie
chart shown above indicates the calls
received by percentage. As you can see,
calls relating to birds account for 66%.
By far the highest number of
injuries relate to fallen baby birds. These
may have been caused by a number of reasons
including tree lopping, land clearing and
strong winds. It is interesting that 24%
were caused by motor vehicles and 15% by
loss of habitat. Again, these two categories
relate to increasing development and the
subsequent population growth.
By the far the highest
number of injuries relates to orphans with
49% of all injuries being "separated from
parents". When this occurs, carers fill the
role of surrogate parent/s until the orphans
are able to fend for themselves.
These
statistics are based on a 4 month sample of
data collected by our Rescue Centre and
carers. We hope that they help to explain
why we need more
members,
carers and
donations!
